The multi-causality in environment and health and its importance for the four priority diseases identified by the European Environment and Health Action Plan (EHAP) 2004-2010 (asthma and allergies, cancer, neurodevelopmental disorders and endocrine disrupting effects) has been acknowledged. The EHAP is based on the Environment and Health Strategy, which has a long-term vision seeking to address the links between poor health and environmental problems, and "reduce diseases linked to environmental factors". This strategy in turn builds upon the aims of the Commission's Sixth Environment Action Programme, a specific aim of which is that levels of pollution in Europe should not give rise to deleterious effects on human or environmental health.
To facilitate an efficient working process, the four priority topics of the EHAP have been chosen as a framework for the HENVINET project:
- Asthma and Allergies
- Neurodevelopmental disorders
- Endocrine disrupting effects
